After the fiasco of the CAN 2021, Algeria experienced a new disillusionment by being eliminated by Cameroon Tuesday in the second leg of the World Cup 2022 (1-2, a.p.). As expected, the coach of the Fennecs, Djamel Belmadi, does not exclude leaving his post after this failure that may mark the end of an exceptional generation.
“Today, you have the opportunity to question everything. It’s too easy… This is not the time to take stock with this emotional charge. We are collapsed. (…) It’s hard to talk about the future. Everyone is down. We did not see ourselves missing this World Cup. Ten seconds away… An assessment will be made but for the moment the disappointment dominates. There are chances that I will please some journalists, some here and on TV sets who are attacking you for lobbies … The coming days and the times that follow will be difficult,” warned the technician in a press conference.
“The Federation, the players, and all the actors of this sport must work together to allow us to move forward. What is important is that this national team must be well surrounded. If we have to change? We will change. I’m not talking about my case but beware of instability. This is never good in soccer,” concluded the winner of the CAN 2019, in tears at the final whistle.
