A symbol and captain of Napoli, Lorenzo Insigne is a child of the club and has spent his entire career there. However, the perfect adventure may be coming to an end sooner than expected. Il Magnifico will soon have to make a difficult choice between staying with the club for the long term or being forced to leave because of the cold relationship he has with his president, Aurelio De Laurentiis.
Lorenzo Insigne, the child of Naples
Naples enjoys the image of the picturesque southern Italian city par excellence. It has a sulphurous image, however, due to the strong presence of crime and the mafia, but above all it attaches great importance to loyalty and love for the city. The late Diego Maradona and Marek Hamsik, for example, were able to give Napoli this love, but very few have done so like Lorenzo Insigne. Born in the Neapolitan district of Frattamaggiore, the young Insigne joined the Partenopei’s training centre at the age of 15 and became an SSC legend. The club’s fifth top scorer, Insigne’s departure from the club seems surreal but recent developments could see him leave his home according to Corriere Dello Sport.
A bad season and a cold relationship with De Laurentiis
The Italian international (38 caps) has been annoyed by his team-mates’ poor season, according to the Italian media outlet. Gennaro Gattuso’s men are fifth in Serie A and were eliminated in the Europa League round of 32 against Granada. The club’s poor sporting record has been compounded by a chaotic relationship with its president, Aurelio De Laurentiis. The terrible Italian businessman would not have forgotten the mutiny in which Insigne took part in 2019 and would have drastically lowered the contract of the Neapolitan number 24 in the future contract of his player. Indeed, Insigne would go from five to two and a half million euros while his contract expires in June 2022. The Italian newspaper claims that the player is now at a crossroads: it will be a career like Francesco Totti or a departure this summer. Napoli fans will no doubt prefer the first option.
