Broncos WR Courtland Sutton on getting Russell Wilson: ‘We’re so excited’ 
Russell Wilson is bound for Denver, and arriving with him are Mile High aspirations and anticipation aplenty.
The Broncos boast a talented young crop of receivers collectively grinning ear to ear at the prospect of Wilson’s arrival, something confirmed by former Pro Bowler Courtland Sutton.
“We’re ecstatic,” Sutton said on NFL Total Access on Thursday after the Denver Broncos agreed to trade Wilson to the Seattle Seahawks. “We’ve had a lot of guys come in and contribute to our room, offense, and team, and every step that we’ve taken has been appreciated. But having Russ come in and having the success that he’s had, having the knowledge that he has, that’s what we need for us as young players, all the fresh talent that we have. We need someone who will come in and be himself, who knows who he is and what he already brings to the table. We’re ecstatic.”
Sutton was a Pro Bowler and a 1,000-yard receiver in 2019 playing with the Broncos‘ parade of starting quarterbacks featuring Joe Flacco, Drew Lock and Brandon Allen. Thus, it’s not arduous to understand just how excited he is to welcome Wilson, a quarterback with nine Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl win on his resume.
Though the deal won’t be finalized until the start of the new league year on March 16, Sutton and his teammates Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick, and K.J. Hamler have already communicated and discussed basic plans for offseason workouts.
“It sets the tempo for our entire team,” Sutton said. “Everybody understands the time that everybody’s on and where we’re trying to get to. It’s exciting for sure.”
The aforementioned receiving group is understandably amped to play with Wilson, but getting to know their new QB and building chemistry beforehand is paramount.
“With a fresh new quarterback and an entirely new scheme, all the reps we can get will be crucial,” Sutton said.
Since winning Super Bowl 50, many believe the Broncos have been a quarterback away from returning to the playoffs and becoming an AFC West title contender. Since then, the Broncos have gone six seasons without making the playoffs. Sutton, on the other hand, emphasizes that nothing has yet been accomplished. It is necessary to put forth the effort.
It’s an approach underscored when considering the Broncos reside in the AFC West, which boasts conference heavyweight Kansas City, a Las Vegas squad that made the playoffs in 2021 and a Los Angeles team that is trading for elite pass rusher Khalil Mack.
The excitement is real, but nothing’s been accomplished as of yet.
“We haven’t been able to handle the [AFC] West as well as we should or would like,” Sutton admitted. “Getting Russ will undoubtedly put us in the position where we want to be.” It’s up to us to get out there and put in the effort. On paper, all of these things appear to be fantastic. But it’s up to us to put in the effort from now until the start of the season to put ourselves in a position where we can declare we’re the best in the west. It’s not going to be something we get just because Russ was picked up. It is up to us, each and every one of us, to put that work together.
