Swindled at Marseille, Pape Gueye tells the whole story.
During his years at Olympique de Marseille, Pape Gueye experienced an unfortunate incident involving an influencer. The Senegalese international fell victim to a scam.
Pape Gueye doesn’t only have good memories of his time in Marseille. Without even mentioning the tensions with president Pablo Longoria and his sidelining, the Villarreal midfielder recalls an unpleasant episode with an influencer. The Senegalese international had extended a hand to his compatriot, only to later realize he had been scammed.
“I was in Marseille, and there was a Snapchatter that people knew. They stopped seeing me with him, so they thought it was weird,“ Pape Gueye told LeChairman on YouTube. “I’m in a city, the guy is Senegalese, so am I, so I kind of took him under my wing like a little brother. I gave him tickets to the stadium, I invited him. During the Africa Cup of Nations, I opened doors for him… I always do things with my heart, expecting nothing in return. I got along well with him.“ But the influencer ended up taking advantage of his generosity.
“I had a Senegalese bank card, and to check the balance, you had to go online. So, I didn’t touch the money from Senegal,” shared the former Olympique de Marseille player. “Thank God, there was no break-in. But not everyone was allowed into my home. I was really careful. In a moment of distraction, while we were together, he took a photo of my Senegalese bank card.“
Pape Gueye recovered everything
“I found out a few months later that he had been sending himself money via PayPal using my Senegalese bank card, so I wasn’t receiving notifications,“ continued Pape Gueye, who eventually recovered the stolen money. “He paid me back everything; it was a significant amount.“ Marked by this ordeal, the midfielder has become more cautious. “You have to be careful with everyone. I’ve also been betrayed by one of my best friends,“ revealed the player, who was trained at Le Havre. He is far from the only footballer to fall victim to this kind of scam.
