10 unemployed coaches, Chelsea’s incredible curse!
Struggling with Lazio Rome, Maurizio Sarri officially submitted his resignation on Wednesday. The Italian will join the list of available coaches this summer, a group that includes other big names like José Mourinho, Thomas Tuchel, and Antonio Conte, all of whom have had stints at Chelsea in recent years.
There’s movement among coaches. Before entering the final stretch of the season, several clubs have decided to change coaches immediately or at the end of the campaign. For example, at Celta Vigo, Rafael Benitez has been shown the door after the heavy defeat to Real Madrid (4-0) last Sunday. Instead of waiting to suffer the same fate, Maurizio Sarri chose to step down. The Italian officially presented his resignation to Lazio Rome on Wednesday.
As for Bayern Munich, the separation with Thomas Tuchel is scheduled for this summer. All these coaches will therefore be on the market at the end of the season. And that’s not their only common point. Indeed, all these coaches have the particularity of having passed through Chelsea. Nothing exceptional so far. However, upon closer inspection, the last ten managers of the Blues will be unemployed this summer! This list also includes André Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, José Mourinho, Guus Hiddink, Antonio Conte, Frank Lampard, and Graham Potter, all currently away from the sidelines.
Chelsea, a cursed club?
Of course, one or more of them may find a bench at any time in the coming weeks or months. But their common situation represents a strange coincidence, or even an incredible curse for coaches who have passed through Chelsea in recent years! We know that the London club is not the most stable place for a manager, despite the departure of former owner Roman Abramovich. But apparently, it’s not always easy to relaunch one’s career after a failure at the Blues.
