Vinicius asks UEFA to strike hard
Being treated as a chimpanzee by Atletico Madrid supporters, Vinicius Junior expressed his deep dismay at the racism prevalent in Spain.
Even without playing or being present nearby, Vinicius Junior was subjected to racist chants on the sidelines of the match between Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. Fans of the Madrid team gathered before the match to support their team outside the stadium, and took the opportunity to chant racist remarks against Vinicius Junior, comparing him to a chimpanzee. Apparently, the fans in question knew exactly what they were doing, as by doing this outside the Metropolitano Stadium, they ensure that any intervention by their club or UEFA on sanctions would be very difficult. However, this did not stop the Brazilian winger from Real Madrid from speaking out on social media, urging the European body to take strong action. “I hope you have already thought about a punishment. For the Champions League and for UEFA. It’s a sad reality that happens even in matches where I am not present,” lamented Vinicius, who must have heard this chant even though his team was not involved.
Vinicius will continue to fight against racism
On its part, Atletico Madrid is expected to file a civil lawsuit against the racist behavior, and La Liga has also expressed its strong vigilance regarding this recurring issue in Spanish football. Javier Tebas explained that legal actions could be taken, even if these actions occurred during a UEFA match. The Brazilian winger has reiterated that he will always fight against racism in stadiums and beyond, even if it may seem like a battle heading in the wrong direction in Spain, where incidents have been multiplying in recent months.
